• Ageing and old age

    Given the imminent expansion of the region’s adult population over the age of 60, one of the main social policy objectives should be focused on ensuring the economic security, health, well-being, and long-term care of older persons, seeking to close the old age income inequality gaps arising out of the lack of economic security, much of the older adult population experiences, owing to lacking pensions after having encountered obstacles to entering the formal labor market during their adult years.

  • Key concepts of inequality in old age

    The number of people over the age of 60 is growing throughout the region as are life expectancies. This segment of the population is estimated to approach 200 million by 2050, making them more than a quarter of the entire population. In such a context, the concepts of healthy life expectancies, long-term care and diverse issues related to physical and mental health such as dementia and non-communicable diseases loom large in the process of closing this population group’s inequality gaps.

    The adult population suffered direct impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic, that were reflected in a higher rate of mortality. But they have also experienced major indirect impacts, such as the loss of support networks, restrictions on access health care and the possibility of experiencing neglect or abuse in medical institutions or care facilities.
